What makes one object art, and another object not-art? Marcel Duchamp, by signing a urinal, declared art to be whatever an artist says it is. And who then is an artist? Anyone who says they are. This Atlantic Monthly article asks "What is the value of a painting that has outlived its appeal? An exploration of what happens when art becomes stuff." In which they ask the question: Can a regular person just buy art that they like and expect their art portfolio to increase in value? Ha! Dream on.
