Orcas Island's Doe Bay Resort looks like a pretty interesting place to visit. They have camping and cabins available and a vegetarian café. The main attraction, aside from the view of the sound, is the spa. Here's a good epinion on Doe Bay. I was looking for the Polarity Institute website, but apparently that is no more, but the spa remains.

The SoloTrek Exo-Skeletor Flying Vehicle allows individual VTOL flight - strapped to your back. Or maybe you are strapped to its front? This seems to be a real project, with DARPA sponsorship. Those traffic jams in Sunnyvale must be getting mighty bad.

There's a nice article on MSNBC about dogs on wheels. Our dog Plato also has a chair from Doggon' Wheels. He's able to go about six blocks in it, with us helping him.
Speaking of Plato, he was at the vet's the other day and they had him lying on a mat on the floor. Another dog, a cocker spaniel, came over when no one was looking and laid on top of him and went to sleep! Here's a picture:

Use toast for weather forecasts - no fooling. A student in England has programmed a toaster in Java to imprint the weather forecast on toast. So you can wake up, make some toast, and see the forecast. This is so cool; I'm sure it will be in Sharper Image before long.

The Healdsburg Guitar Festival happens in Northern California in August. They have many luthiers, players, concerts and workshops. We're talking acoustic guitars here. It all looks pretty good.

The Halfbakery is a repository for half-baked ideas. There are some good ones here. I especially liked the idea of putting a Faraday shield around theaters to keep cell phones and pagers from making noise. If only that would work on digital watches too. OK so doctors won't be able to be contacted in an emergency - what are they doing in a theater, anyway? They should be out on the golf course where they belong.
