Absolute Piffle

General commentary and new links from Richard Gillmann. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's serious, and sometimes it's just there.

Erica Nicole Eber Erica Nicole Eber has founded a squad of Caltech cheerleaders. Oh no, not

"Cosine, secant, tangent, sine
Three point one four one five nine!"
But it turns out they are talking actual, you know, blondes. Quite a change from the nerdy male-only school of the 1960s (now they have girl nerds, too).

Of course, we did have a football team back then. Brave souls, those football players. I remember our quarterback Lonnie Martin's frantic backpedaling in the face of the big rush our opponents always had, then throwing a pass forty yards through the air for a five yard gain.

Thinking of getting into shape and entering a triathlon? My friend Mary did and she recommends the services of Victoria Scott, who can be hired as a personal trainer.

Mary was swimming across Lake Washington and the whole nine yards (well, a lot longer than that), so I can testify that it must work.

Notepad icon Notepad.org covers my favorite HTML editing tool. Compatible with all versions of HTML (even future versions), low memory foot print, universal file format, and it's FREE with all versions of Windows. And even though the Windows 2000 version has a few additions, they've really held the line on feature creep. It's even reviewed on ePinions.

The ReplayTV Hacking Project shows you how to crack open your ReplayTV box and add addtional hard disc capacity. What I'd really like to see is the addition of HDTV features, but no sign of that so far.

This one's been around for awhile: Are children of techies more likely to be autistic? Now you can take the 50-question AQ Test to see if you are autistic. Well it's not quite that simple, but high scores (over 32) do tend to be indicative. I scored 14. I wonder how Bill Gates would score on it.

We were in Hawaii last week. It was great, especially seeing the humpback whales off Maui. We saw them breaching many times, even just watching from the shore. It wasn't wall-to-wall whales, but there were still a lot of them.

One thing I learned in Hawaii is that there are now boutique organic coffee growers, mostly on the Kona coast of the big island. Their prices are sky high, like $45 a pound, but all hand made and organically grown. Still, does it taste better? Here are some web sites I got from an in-flight magazine.

Mark Nottingham has written a very nice Caching Tutorial for Web Authors and Webmasters. He explains why "pragma no-cache" doesn't really do the trick. With proper coding, you can make your website more cache-friendly and then your viewers will get faster peformance and your database will have a lighter load. Good stuff.

Hey my old compadre at Microsoft, Adam Barr, got his book reviewed at Salon.com. I'm impressed.

Don't you hate that stupid Caps Lock key? I can't remember ever wanting that function; I only get it by mistake. I decided to do something about it and found this: CapsLockOff is a free program that disables the Caps Lock key. It seems to work fine on Windows 2000. Thank you David Bleckmann.

African Music Radio Programs in Seattle. Doug Paterson, a fellow KBCS DJ, is also on KSER and KEXP. I'm envious! He does a great show of African music. I often discover new musicians I like when I listen to him.

The drain Remember Ms. Chartoff from the TV show "Fridays"? It's seems that, in addition to doing voices for Rugrats, she's become an inventor.

In 1991 Melanie Chartoff conceived a device that would permit the reuse of shower and sink water. With the help of business partner Michael Bell, Inventor Ron Ford and Engineer Timothy Nicely, the device has been patented and readied for manufacture. Read on for more details about the GRAYWAY ROTATING DRAIN.

The patent number is 5,274,861. This is in the great tradition of Hedy Lamarr, who co-invented spread sprectrum radio. Ok, maybe Hedy had more secure communications, but did she recycle her shower water?

The Trip.com FlightTracker will pinpoint the position of any flight while it's enroute. Handy if you're meeting someone at the airport.
