Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on the morning of Monday, August 29, 2005. It was a Category 4 storm which exceeded the design limit of the levees (Category 3). The flooding recalled the great flood of 1927.
In September of 2008, Hurriance Ike struck Galveston, TX recalling the great flood of 1900, which killed 6,000 people (the worst disaster in U.S. history).
